Common Issues¶
Simple fixes for common problems. No technical knowledge needed.
The Internet Isn't Working¶
First, check: Is it just one device or everything?
- Just one device → restart that device (turn it off and on). Not a homelab problem.
- Everything → go to the router, turn it off at the plug, wait 30 seconds, turn it back on. Wait 2 minutes. Try again.
- Still not working → contact your internet provider. Not a homelab problem.
[App Name] Isn't Loading¶
Replace this with actual apps during setup. One section per important service.
Try this first: 1. Wait 2 minutes and try again — the service may be starting up 2. Try from a different device 3. If still not loading, try restarting the service (see below)
How to restart [App Name]:
How you know it worked:
Home Assistant Isn't Responding¶
- Wait 2 minutes — it may still be starting after a power cut
- Try opening:
- If the page loads but automations aren't working, try restarting Home Assistant:
A Light / Plug / Smart Home Device Isn't Responding¶
- Check if Home Assistant is working (see above)
- Try turning the physical device off at the wall and back on
- If it's a bulb, turn the light switch off and on again slowly
- Still not working → it may need re-pairing. Contact Dan.
Something Is Making an Unusual Noise¶
- A clicking or grinding sound from the NAS boxes → contact Dan immediately — this can indicate a failing hard drive
- Fan noise during or after a power cut is normal — it should settle down
- Beeping → take a photo of any lights or displays and contact Dan
I Don't Know What's Wrong¶
That's okay. Here's what to do:
- Take note of what you were trying to do and what happened
- Check if this documentation loads at the other address:
- Cloud:
- Local:
- Contact Dan with a description of what you observed
You don't need to fix everything. Some things are fine to leave until Dan is available.
